Agriculture and Horticulture Compost

The East of England is the most intensively farmed area of the UK. Soil types vary from very sandy soils, which are low in organic matter and prone to wind and water erosion, to very heavy clay soils that lack structure and are prone to compaction and surface water run off.

Scientific trials have documented numerous benefits from applying compost to arable farmland. Compost can provide a small amount of nutrient that is immediately available to the crop; it increases the microbial activity within the soil and is of particular benefit in improving the soil structure meaning reduced cultivation costs. Compost increases the water holding capacity of soils, both reducing the need for irrigation and the risk of nutrients leaching into the watercourse.

Remade East works to encourage greater communication between compost manufacturers and farmers/agronomists in the region. The aim is to ensure continuity in both the quality and availability of composted products.
